02 – Goals

Set Performance Goals

There are two types of goals:
  1. Performance – goals related to your own self improvement, such as training harder or improving your technique).
  2. Outcome goals – goals which focus on beating other opponents or teams, and are related to other athletes (e.g., I want to be the top scorer on my team).
Question: Why is Alice so annoyed with Tyler?

Alice is annoyed because Tyler cheated. His foot went over the line when trying to score a try and he knew this had happened. Even though Tyler won the match for this team, he was not as happy because he’d cheated. Athletes are more likely to cheat when they set outcome goals, because there is such an emphasis on winning.
